Boz's Bit o' Bollocks
Boz's Bit o' Bollocks is a once-weekly show that is broadcast on SLAY Radio every Wednesday at 20:00 CET (UTC+1) or CEST in the summertime (UTC+2), and is hosted by Boz. It was originally called the Bowness Bit o' Bollocks, and got its name from two sources:
- Boz's real surname is "Bowness", and if said with a slightly different emphasis than normal, sounds like "Bonus".
- The show was a "Bonus" show to complement The Z Show, a show that was broadcast on SLAY Radio every Sunday.
When Boz moved to Sweden in June 2005, he and his sidekick Kenz (who wasn't moving) decided to finish The Z Show; however, BBB (which had been running for a couple of months before the end of Z) continued when Boz moved. The show stopped being "Bonus" to anything any more, so the name changed to just BBB (and the Bowness/Bonus reference being changed).
Show Description
BBB is mainly a request show where listeners' requests are played in a random order. However, to stop it from being just a normal run-of-the-mill show, the emphasis is geared towards the "bollocks" that Boz talks about - bollocks in this context being a slang British word meaning "nonsense". The show is broadcast without a script, and Boz basically ad-libs about life in general, or something a listener has said in an e-mail or, more often, live on the IRC chat that is occurring while the show is running. This allows for a more personal experience with the listeners; something which has given BBB a relatively high constant following of listeners.
The show lasts for three hours, finishing at 23:00 CET/CEST. The first half-hour is ironically called the "rehearsal" even though it is live. This stemmed from one show where the relays kept resetting and the show had a number of "false starts"; it has now come to mean that more music is played with less talk, to establish a "mood" for the listeners before the talking gets underway. Then, after a longer tune is played, the webcam is switched on and Boz comes out of rehearsal - i.e. he starts talking.
The final ten to 15 minutes of the show is a "wind-down", where slower tunes are played. There is usually then an outro jingle, and control is passed back to the rotational.
Regular Items
- Listeners ask for Binsters' "Ghouls 'n Ghosts (Poltergeist Mix)" to be played in full and uninterrupted, knowing full well that Boz frequently pauses the tune to chat about completely random topics.
- Mid-Tune "Wot?" Pause: Where there is a perfect spot in a tune - usually going from the Bridge back to the reprise - the tune is paused, there is silence or sometimes a silly song. After a random amount of silence, Boz utters "What?" in a gutteral Leicester accent (hence, "Wot?") and the tune continues.
-
"Reyowah!" This is how Boz pronounces Reyn Ouwehand's name (which seems to be getting more and more bizarre). This is due to Reyn saying his name quickly in his Dutch accent. This has recently been replaced with the: - Reyn Ouwehand Extended Introduction. This came about because Reyn's name is frequently mispronounced as "Rain"; therefore, a number of songs with "rain" in the lyrics are played, usually edited slightly to change the meaning (removing "the" from "the rain", for instance).
- Always (purposefully) saying remixer Moog's real name -- Sebastian BachliƱski -- incorrectly, to the point that there is a mock "How to say Moog's Real Name Properly" sketch that listeners ask for, because they've "forgotten how to say it".
- Having a mock conversation with the sampled voice in Trace's "Zoids (the Better Days)" along the lines of "Do you remember the days?" / "What days?" / "You know..." / "No?" / "The better days..."
- Personalised greetings when certain listeners appear on IRC or request a tune. This is either a song or a certain effect added on to Boz's voice when saying their name.
- Birthday Greetings - if it's a listener's birthday near to the BBB, Boz will usually sing it as a "Smurf", i.e. a voice FX unit is used to raise Boz's voice up an octave. The American addition "and many more" is usually sung at the end as well. More recently, an "in-house band" (provided by regular listeners BozWank, Wenchie and ShenChi) sing the song and play it with a violin, purposefully out of tune.
